Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to explore and investigate how to build and manage Kubernetes clusters. This is important for many service providers, because there is a desire to keep a low amount of resources running when there are low numbers of traffic. This can have economic benefits. Being able to manage the amount of resources quickly is important when the traffic increases to keep within service level agreements and to keep the service running for the customers. Docker is a relatively new type of technology that allows for virtualization and running of applications. The focus of the thesis is to use this new type of technology effectively.
In this thesis, we will give some of the basic container concepts and how they work as well as why management and orchestration are important to your business or project team. Throughout the thesis, an example that can demo for the locally Kubernetes will give you a brief overview of how Kubernetes orchestration can enhance our container management strategy. By the end of the thesis, I will show all the installation as well as configuration when using this technique in your company and how we can get a basic Kubernetes cluster up, running, and ready for container deployments.
For objective evaluation, the thesis became to test the ability this new type of technology in the real situations in the company. Two experiments were designed to test. The first experiment wanted to test the ability of Kubernetes, while the second experiment was used to explore the QoS and ERU. Given the results, it became evident that Kubernetes should be chosen over normal virtualization technique when considering. Even though research and theory regarding Docker Linux containers gives an indication of it being significantly fast, it is impossible to definitely conclude that all software that uses Docker Linux containers technique would perform better than software using virtual machines and templates. It is however likely to assume that it would be the case in most setups.
