Abstract: 
In the contemporary automotive landscape, the integration of sophisticated
computerized systems into vehicles, particularly the emergence of smart electric
vehicles, has led to an increasing array of functionalities. Consequently, there is a
pressing need for more precise and comprehensive automobile diagnostic methods
to facilitate effective repair procedures. The existing diagnostic systems are
categorized as on-board and off-board, both employing distinct approaches while
sharing a common principle—utilizing diagnostic trouble codes to pinpoint faults
or system errors in the vehicle. This thesis focuses on implementing an off-board
system using the unified diagnostic services defined in ISO-14229-1 and the CAN
communication protocol defined by ISO-15765
